Knowing God

Roundup 482 – Day Two – The Wisdom Of God

As we look into the wisdom of God we once again start upon the foundation of faith. As we've mentioned before, we do not seek to understand in order to believe. We believe in order to understand. With this in mind, we won't be seeking proof that God is wise as the true believing heart shouldn't require any proof to substantiate anything that God tells us about Himself.

Daniel 2:20-23 (NIV)

  1. and said: "Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his.
  2. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.
  3. He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.
  4. I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king."

Daniel states quite clearly here that wisdom belongs to God. What the Scriptures say about God can believed without questioning. When we claim that God is wise we need to once again be careful not to define wise by worldly terms. God is infinitely wise. Unlike people we claim are wise, God is not just wise in one area. He is infinitely and perfectly wise in all areas. His wisdom cannot be flawed in any circumstances. There is no greater wisdom on anything because His wisdom is always perfect and complete. Infinite is a word that cannot have different levels. There isn't such thing as more infinite or less infinite.

As wise as some people (even people in the Bible like Solomon) may seem, their wisdom is embarrassingly and pathetically weak in comparison to God. The greatest of all human wisdom is only a dim reflection of the wisdom that has been given to them by God. It's for this reason that Paul can finish the book of Romans with these words. God is the only wise!

(Rom 16:27 NIV) to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

God's infinite wisdom is always being questioned. Therefore an understanding of his infinite wisdom is important for all of us. God however is not affected by our opinions of Him. When people doubt His wisdom, He isn't any less wise but the accuser is showing their lack of wisdom.

Throughout the Bible, the use of the word wisdom usually carries some form of moral connotation. It is perceived as purity, goodness, justice and loving. Wisdom that is described as sheer arrogance is usually accredited to self-motivated workers of evil. This type of wisdom is not really wisdom at all.

True wisdom leads to the most perfect end result by the most perfect means. It needs to see the situation in the big picture from beginning to end so that there is no risk caused by guessing. Wisdom sees everything in focus and each step in perspective. When we so often quote Romans 8:28, we do so with faith in God's perfect wisdom. Something tragic may have happened and someone quotes the verse to you. That doesn't mean that the person quoting it, is happy about what has happened. Nor does it mean that person quoting it knows how God will bring something good from the situation. It simply means that the person who shared the verse with you trusts that God is infinitely wise and that He does bring about the perfect result in the most perfect means for His people. As we've said all over summer – a proper knowledge about God will relieve you of ten thousand temporal problems.

(Rom 8:28 NIV) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

You'll get so many people questioning the infinite wisdom of God in a world that seems so wrong. If God created us to be in intimate relationship with Him but we decided we were wiser, having no need for God and rule our lives based upon our own "superior" wisdom, can God's wisdom be blamed for the state of things? It would appear that man's decision to rule independently of God based on their own "wisdom" has brought the world into the state that it's in. When God in His perfect wisdom set the rules for living, there was a perfect world, life and relationships until such a point that the serpent was able to get Adam and Eve to question and doubt the perfect wisdom of God. When trust in God's perfect wisdom was replaced by trust in man's wisdom, this was what we refer to as the fall of man. This is the origin of sin. This is beginning and the mindset that has brought the world to where it is today.

In spite of tears, pain and death we believe that the God who made us is infinitely wise and good. Moses by faith trusted that God could and would achieve the things that He called Moses to do. As we continue to seek and know God better, we can find more peace in resting in who God is. This is the foundation of faith. Any faith that requires evidence is not really faith at all. When Thomas doubted that Jesus had risen from the dead, he wanted proof but while Christ gave him proof he did go on to say that "blessed are those who have not seen and have believed".

(John 20:29 NIV) Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

True faith is evidenced when amidst difficult circumstances, the believer can stand firm knowing and trusting that God in His infinite wisdom has everything under control for His good purposes.

The whole structure of God's plan from creation to the final overthrow of evil and establishment of Christ's righteous kingdom all flow from God's infinite wisdom. We often read the bible and think "that was genius of God to do that" but He'd known how it would all pan out before He'd even created the world.

While it's important that we wholly believe in the infinite wisdom of God, our belief must go beyond mental understanding into a daily life that reflects a genuine faith in who God is. We need to be actively believing that God in His infinitely wise plan for our lives, puts things all around us for them to shape our life and experience for our present and everlasting good.

Most of us naturally want to see ahead and plan our life ahead with our own goals and we hustle our way to get there. This can be a hindrance to our spiritual lives. Many are so set on their own paths that they are blinded to the work that God is preparing for them. We so often miss God's purposes in bringing events or people in our lives because we only evaluate them in the light of our own plans.

In God's infinite wisdom, He can be trusted in all circumstances. You all will have heard stories of people who decided they no longer wanted anything to do with God because they felt that there lives were too miserable to believe that God was in control working everything for their benefit. Luckily you've also heard stories of people who've been through some tragically tough times but kept pressing on – not because their situation looked hopeful but because they KNEW that God in His wisdom was in control. I think the most powerful testimony I've heard of someone who stands because they trust in who God is was an old homeless lady in Texas. She didn't have much in life that we would call exciting or even happy but I've never heard in my life someone express with such confidence their trust and love for Jesus Christ. Our circumstances don't change God. God's plans for our good don't change. To know and trust this is what will keep you standing when others fall. What a blessing it is to know our God and to know that He's unchanging!!!

(Isa 42:16 NIV) I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.
